The world has come to expect the unusual, the bold and the breathtaking from the architectural projects in Dubai and THE PALMS and THE WORLD ISLANDS are no exception.
The PALM ISLANDS are three islands being built off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in the magnificent Arabian Gulf. The islands are designed to include not only luxurious residential properties but hotels, shopping centres, leisure and spa facilities, marinas and water sports etc. The Palm Islands represent an opportunity for investment in the leisure and hospitality sectors as well as for individuals.
Although all three resemble palm trees, each development is distinctive and in different sizes and their development is staged over a number of years.
The PALM JUMEIRAH off the Jumeirah beach, the smallest of the developments, is the most advanced. Begun in 2001 it is expected to be completed 2008. It is basically in the shape of a palm tree, the trunk extending from the mainland, with 17 fronds, and with a crescent halo around the fronds acting as a breakwater. To either side of the trunk are two privately owned islands.
The PALM JEBEL ALI, begun in 2002, is 50% larger than Palm Jumeirah although similar in layout and, as the name implies is off the Jebel Ali coast. The main theme of Jebel Ali is leisure and entertainment for all ages.
The largest of these man-made Palm island developments is DEIRA, similar in design to the other two but with 41 palm fronds instead of the 17 the others have. These fronds are where it is intended private residential dwellings will be built. It is not anticipated that this development will be completed before 2015.
The WORLD ISLANDS is a development incorporating numerous man-made islands, of varying sizes, grouped in such a way that from the air they resemble a map of world - islands located to form the continents of the world. Acces to islands by water.
Investors can develop and configure the islands to their own design incorporating marinas, beaches, resorts etc to suit their specific ideas.
Shanghai Island has been bought by a Chinese developer.
